Sarah, Plain and Tall

The Hallmarks of True Love

The story of Sarah, Plain and Tall begins with an ad that says, “Needed: a kind woman to share a life with a widower and his two young children, to make a difference.” Sarah decides that she will spend one month in Kansas so that she and Jacob (the man who sent out the ad) can decide if the arrangement can be made permanent in marriage. Sarah finds that although Jacob’s son Caleb has a heart ready to receive her, his sister Anna is haunted by the memory of her mother who died when she was only three years old. Sarah is able to eventually win the heart of Anna, but winning the heart of Jacob proves to be a more difficult matter, who only wants a wife so she can take care of his children. Jacob has truly been devastated in his heart and soul by the loss of his wife, Katherine, six years before, and this grief prevents Jacob from responding to the love of this generous but independent-minded woman. In the end, Jacob is able to confront his grief, and a new family is born.
